SaskTel Pioneers present Melfort Habitat for Humanity with a cheque

SaskTel Pioneers present Melfort Habitat for Humanity with a cheque for $20,000

September 17, 2014

At 11:00 a.m. today, the SaskTel Pioneers volunteer organization will be presenting Habitat for Humanity with a cheque for $20,000. The donation will support the building of Habitat’s first home in Melfort, now underway on 310 Crawford Street West.

“We are very excited to be able to help support Habitat’s work in Melfort,” said Ian Howard, SaskTel Pioneers Chapter 59 President. “We have made similar donations for first builds at Moose Jaw, Nipawin, and North Battleford. We are just happy to be able to work with an organization that makes a difference in these communities.”

Tanya Chester, Volunteer Coordinator for the Melfort Habitat project said that without donations like this one from the SaskTel Pioneers, the build would not be happening. “The Pioneers gift allows us to continue engendering goodwill and a  helping spirit into the community,” she said. “The Habitat for Humanity system takes resources like this and pays them forward so future builds can happen, ensuring that for the family who benefits it is more of a ‘hand up’ than a ‘hand out’.”

The cheque presentation ceremony will be conducted in downtown Melfort next to the Post Office. The local SaskTel Pioneers club is hosting a bar-b-que on site, raising additional funds by selling a burger and a pop for $5. The public is welcome to attend and celebrate Habitat for Humanity’s first build in the city.

At the cheque presentation ceremony, SaskTel Pioneer representatives and Habitat for Humanity volunteers will be on site and available for media interviews. The home is now completely enclosed with roof and sheathing and Habitat volunteers continue to work every week on the project.
